Symmetry of Flowers:

On the basis of symmetry of flowers, there

are following three types:

1. Actinomorphic (regular or radially symmetrical) Flower:

Actinomorphic flowers are those, in which floral whorls (sepals and petals) are of the same size and shape.

They are so arranged that the flower can be divided into two equal (identical) halves along any plane passing through the centre.

e.g., mustard, China rose, etc.

2. Zygomorphic (Monosymmetrical or bilaterally symmetrical) Flower:

Zygomorphic flowers are those, in which the flower can be divided into two equal halves only along one plane (anterio-posterior plane)

e.g., pea, Ocimum, etc.

3. Asymmetrical or irregular Flower:

Asymmetrical flowers are those which cannot be divided into two equal halves along any plane,

e.g. Carina.
